On slow tools, and why they win

J. Lindqvist · September 14, 2026 · 4 min read

Every few years the tools around us get faster, and yet the work somehow feels slower. The instant message replaced the letter, and the thoughtful reply disappeared with it. This is an essay about choosing friction on purpose.

Speed is a fine servant and a poor master. When a tool responds before we finish thinking, it quietly decides what we think about.

The best tools don't save time — they spend it where it matters.

A slower tool gives ideas room to catch up. The draft that sits overnight is better than the draft that ships in ninety seconds, almost always.

So keep the fast tools for the parts that deserve them. But guard a few slow ones: the paper notebook, the long walk, the boring file format that outlives every app.
